Summer Opening Hours and Closure Due to Renovation Works

18. June, 2026

During the summer months, the library will operate under adjusted opening hours as follows: From Monday, June 29, 2026, to Friday, August 7, 2026, the library’s opening hours will be reduced to 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. From Monday, August 10, 2026, to Friday, September 25, 2026, the library will be completely closed due to the ongoing renovation of the Loan and Reference Services Department. As Monday, September 28, 2026, is a public holiday, the library will reopen on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The library reserves the right to modify the information regarding the closure during the course of the renovation. During the closure, lending, information, interlibrary loans and reprographic services will not be available, and access to the study room and cloakroom will not be permitted. Simplified Registration and Updates to the Library Rules

The registration process has been simplified and streamlined. The system will now automatically redirect you to the payment gateway without the need to log in again. For the Complete registration via Bank iD, simply verify your identity, submit the form, set your password, and you will be automatically redirected to the payment gateway. Renewing your registration is equally straightforward — after submitting the form, you proceed directly to payment. Updated Library Regulations

2. March, 2026

The updated Library Regulations are valid as of 2 March 2026. Following structural changes to the library, the Library regulations have been amended, changing the Department of Historical Bibliography to the Book History Department. This concerns section „4.1.5 Copies from the historical book collection“. The staff of this department will continue to decide on the granting of one-off reproduction rights and consult on the procedure for reproductions from the historical book collection.

Planned Service Outage

Dear users, on Saturday, 28 February, a planned outage of the IT infrastructure will take place. During the outage, all our services will be temporarily unavailable. The expected duration of the outage is approximately 4–5 hours (from around 10:00). The stated time is indicative and may change depending on the progress of the work. A new issue of the journal Knihy a dějiny has been published

We are delighted to present the new issue of Knihy a dějiny, which once again offers a diverse selection of studies and reviews that reflect current research in the field of book culture within a broad European framework. We hope that the new issue will provide inspiration both for scholars of bibliography, literary and cultural history, and for the broader public interested in European cultural history. The print edition is available in the e-shop; the online version is available on the journal’s website.

Edvard Beneš nežije už déle než tři čtvrtě století, přesto zůstává předmětem tolika debat a polemik jako žádný jiný novodobý český politik. Jan Očko of Vlašim: the first Czech cardinal and advisor to Charles IV.

For the Czech King and Emperor Charles IV.
The Church was a fundamental support of his reign.
A pivotal role in the relationship of mutual support was played by Charles’ peer, confidant and friend, Jan Očko of Vlašim.
Zdeňka Hledíková’s book traces Jan’s neurotic origins and his rise in the person of King and Emperor Charles.
Jan continued the founding work of his predecessor, the first Archbishop of Prague, Arnost of Pardubice, dedicated himself to the organisation of the diocese, and supported reform preachers such as the famous Jan Milíč of Kroměříž at synods.
Jan Očko of Vlašim was appointed the first cardinal of Czech origin in 1378 and at the end of that year, the day after the death of Emperor Charles, he retired from the archiepiscopal see.
An era of Czech medieval history was over.
The book, which its author has not had time to prepare for publication, was prepared by the historian Jan Hrdina with an afterword.
